Elements & Temperaments — a Compatibility Cheat Sheet
Before the houses, the aspects, and the Sanskrit, there's a beautifully simple layer of astrology that explains a surprising amount about any two people: the elements and the modalities. Think of this as the cheat sheet — the first thing to look at, and often the most clarifying.
The four elements: how you're wired
Every sign belongs to one of four elements, and each is a basic temperament:
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — passionate, spontaneous, driven by inspiration. Needs freedom and excitement.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — grounded, practical, driven by results. Needs stability and reliability.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — mental, social, driven by ideas. Needs conversation and space.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — emotional, intuitive, driven by feeling. Needs depth and closeness.
The classic compatibilities are easy to remember: fire + air feed each other (air fans the flame); earth + water nourish each other (water makes earth fertile). Same-element pairs share a language but can lack contrast. And the famous tension pairs — fire + water (steam and sizzle), earth + air (the practical and the abstract) — are the ones that both fascinate and frustrate.
The three modalities: how you operate
Within the elements, each sign also has a modality — its style of moving through the world:
- Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) — initiators. They start things, lead, set direction.
- Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) — sustainers. They hold, commit, and (lovingly) refuse to budge.
- Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) — adapters. They flex, adjust, and go with the flow.
This is the underrated half of the cheat sheet. Two fixed people are loyal and steady — and can lock horns when neither will bend. A cardinal and a mutable often work beautifully: one leads, one flows. Two cardinals may both want to drive.
Reading any pair in ten seconds
Put them together and you get a fast, genuinely useful first read:
- Fire + air, cardinal + mutable: easy, energising, a bit restless.
- Earth + water, both fixed: deep, devoted, stubborn — built to last if they choose flexibility.
- Fire + water, fixed + fixed: magnetic and stormy; the passion and the power struggle live together.
It won't tell you everything — but it tells you the weather of a connection in one glance.
Why it's a cheat sheet, not a verdict
Here's the catch, and it's the whole Alwenna philosophy: a chart is a compass, not a verdict. Elements and modalities are the broad strokes. The Moon, Venus, Mercury and the rest fill in everything that makes a specific couple. A "difficult" elemental mix can be a glorious relationship, and an "easy" one can go flat. Use the cheat sheet to understand the texture — never to decide a person.
The Vedic echo
Vedic astrology has its own elemental and temperamental layers — the elements of the signs, and the gana (deva/manushya/rakshasa temperaments of the nakshatras), which the Ashtakoota match weighs directly.
