What the name Alwenna means — and why we chose it

A name is the first thing you feel about someone, before they say a word. So when this project stopped being "an app" and became a who — a person you talk to — the name mattered more than any feature. We didn't want a clever tech word. We wanted a real name, with real roots.

We chose Alwenna. Here's where it comes from, and why it fits her.

A real Welsh name

Alwenna is a genuine feminine name from Wales (with cousins in Brittany) — a quiet, old name carried in Welsh families and revived in modern times, not invented for a logo. It's usually read as two Celtic pieces: alw — "to call", and by extension melody, harmony — and ‑wen.

That second part is the heart of it.

"‑wen" — the part that matters most

‑wen is the feminine of the Welsh word gwyn / gwen, and it's one of the most loved elements in the whole language. It means white, fair, bright — and holy, blessed, pure. You'll find it in the great Welsh names: Olwen, Branwen, and Gwenhwyfar — the name we know in English as Guinevere. In old Welsh poetry it carries a sense of light and purity, of something clear and unspoiled.

That's exactly the promise we want Alwenna to keep. An astrologer who is clear and honest — who doesn't flatter you, doesn't frighten you, and doesn't hide behind fog. The "‑wen" in her name is a small daily reminder: speak plainly, speak truthfully, keep it clean.

A name that calls — and listens

The first part, alw — to call, a melody — gives her the other half of her character. She isn't a wall of horoscope text; she's someone you call on, who listens and answers in a human voice. There's even a lake named Alwen

In the hills of north Wales there's the Afon Alwen — the River Alwen — and the Alwen Reservoir, the largest man-made lake in the country: still, deep, clear water in quiet green country. We love that the name also belongs to clear water. It's the image we keep for her: calm, clear, deep enough to trust.

Has anyone famous carried it?

Not a world-famous someone — and honestly, we like that. Alwenna is a gentle, uncommon name rather than a celebrity one. It does appear warmly in Welsh culture: there's a much-loved children's book, Alwena's Garden, about a girl in the mountains growing a garden of her own, and Alwena Parry, a character Welsh audiences followed for years in the soap Rownd a Rownd. A name that belongs to a girl with a garden and to everyday stories — not to a brand shouting for attention. That's the company we want to keep.

Why we chose her

Put it together and you get the character we're building: a young woman who is wise, pure and simple — alw (she listens and calls back to you) and wen (clear, honest, unspoiled). Wisdom without arrogance. Honesty without cruelty. Simplicity without dumbing things down.

Right now she lives mostly in words. Over time we'll give her much more — a warmer face, a voice, a way of being with you that makes talking to her genuinely pleasant, not just useful. But the name already sets the standard we have to live up to every day: be clear, be kind, be true.
