Your 7th House — the Blueprint of Who You Fall For

Most people, if they're honest, have a type. Not always a healthy one. You look back at the people you've loved and there's a thread — a temperament, a vibe, sometimes the same lesson on repeat. Astrology has a name for where that thread lives: your 7th house.

The house of "the other"

In Western astrology the chart is divided into twelve houses, twelve areas of life. The 1st house is you — your body, your instinct, how you start things. Directly across from it sits the 7th house: the other. Partnership, marriage, close one-to-one bonds, and the qualities you look for in someone else.

The cusp of the 7th house is your Descendant — and it's no accident that it's the exact opposite point from your Ascendant (your rising sign). Astrologically, we're often drawn to what we don't have. The 7th house describes the traits you tend to seek in a partner precisely because they complete something in you.

Reading your blueprint

Two things colour your 7th house:

  • The sign on the cusp (your Descendant). A Libra Descendant seeks harmony, fairness, a true partner. An Aries Descendant is drawn to bold, direct, take-charge people. A Capricorn Descendant wants someone solid, mature, dependable — and so on.
  • The ruler of that sign, and where it sits. This is the deeper layer. If your Descendant ruler is tucked in your house of work, you may meet partners through your career. If it's strong and well-placed, partnership tends to come more easily; if it's stressed, relationships may be where your growth (and your tests) live.

Put together, that's your blueprint: not a single fated person, but a pattern — the kind of partner your chart keeps reaching for.

"Type" isn't destiny

Here's the part that matters. Knowing your 7th house isn't about resigning yourself to a type. It's about seeing the pull so you can choose with your eyes open.

If your Descendant draws you to powerful, dominant partners, that can be wonderful — or it can be the same painful story on a loop. The chart doesn't decide which. Awareness does. The most useful thing your 7th house gives you isn't a prediction; it's a mirror: ah, this is what I reach for, and this is why.

The Vedic view: the 7th house and the Darakaraka

Vedic astrology also treats the 7th house (from the Lagna) as the house of the spouse and partnership — and it adds a beautiful extra layer: the Darakaraka, the planet at the lowest degree in your chart, said to signify the partner you're destined to meet. Two traditions, both pointing at the same quiet truth: the kind of person you bond with is, in part, written in the sky you were born under.

How Alwenna reads it

Ask Alwenna "what kind of partner am I actually drawn to?" and she'll read your 7th house — sign, ruler, and the Vedic signs of partnership — and tell you, in plain language, the pattern you keep reaching for and what it's really asking of you. Grounded in your actual placements, never generic.

And when you bring her two charts, she sees how your blueprint meets theirs. Ask Alwenna about you two →
