"The Descendant: The Partner You're Magnetically Drawn To"

Everyone knows their rising sign — the Ascendant, the self you lead with. Almost no one looks at the point exactly opposite it: the Descendant. Yet that single point is one of astrology's most direct statements about love. If the Ascendant is "who I am," the Descendant is "who I'm drawn to" — the qualities you don't carry yourself, so you go looking for them in a partner.

What the Descendant is

The Descendant (DSC) is the cusp of the 7th house — the western point of your chart, sitting exactly 180° across from your Ascendant. Where the Ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, the Descendant is the sign setting in the west at that same moment.

Symbolically, it's the "not-me" you reach for. It describes the qualities you tend to find magnetic in others, the type you fall for, and what you're unconsciously seeking in a partner to feel complete. Your Ascendant faces the world; your Descendant faces the one across the table.

What it means for who you love

Because the Descendant is the sign opposite your rising sign, it's often qualities you don't lead with yourself:

  • A fiery Aries rising often has a Libra Descendant — drawn to harmony, grace, and partners who soften their edge.
  • A guarded Capricorn rising may have a Cancer Descendant — magnetized by warmth and emotional openness.
  • The sign and any planets on your Descendant color the type: a Venus there seeks beauty and ease; a Mars there is drawn to intensity and drive.

This is the close cousin of your 7th house, the house of who you fall for — the Descendant is its front door, the single most personal point of it.

What it does — and doesn't — mean

The Descendant is a pull, not a prescription. It describes the qualities you're drawn to, not a specific person or sign you're "supposed" to date. Plenty of happy couples don't match each other's Descendant sign at all. And the pull has a shadow: the very traits you seek "out there" are often ones you haven't developed in here — which is why the 7th house is also the house of projection.

It's a tendency, not a sentence. The healthiest version of the Descendant isn't finding someone to complete you — it's growing the missing quality in yourself, then meeting a partner who shares it rather than supplies it. The point names the attraction; maturity decides what you do with it.

Why two systems are better than one here

Western astrology reads attraction through the Descendant and the 7th house by sign and planet. Vedic astrology centers the same 7th house (kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse) but asks it differently — weighing the partner-to-be through whole-sign houses, the 7th lord, and the Ashtakoota match of two natures rather than a magnetic "type." One names what you reach for; the other measures whether the person you reach for actually fits. Each clearly badged, together they tell you not just who you're drawn to, but whether the pull and the fit point the same way.

How Alwenna reads it

Alwenna reads your Descendant and 7th house — the sign, any planets there, and how your partner's chart lights it up — then tells you, in plain language, what you're magnetically drawn to and whether this particular person matches the pull. No vague "you'll meet a tall stranger"; just your two real charts, the Western and Vedic view, each clearly badged.

Bring her the two of you and ask, "Are they my type — or my growth?" She'll tell you honestly — and in context. Ask Alwenna about you two →
